Taste of University Heights/UH Arts Open

Sunday, September 20, 2009 noon-5pm

Get a great taste of food and art in University Heights on Sunday, September 20, 2009 from noon to 5 p.m. at the 2nd annual University Heights Community Development Corporation (UHCDC) Taste of University Heights. This year, the event is a collaborative effort with the 4th annual University Heights Arts Open, which means more of what University Heights already has to offer: fun, food, and art! 

First, stroll through our quaint neighborhood enjoying sample delicacies from some of University Heights' diverse restaurants. Then, enjoy a free self-guided tour of the arts.

The UH Arts Open (UHAO) showcases the works of over 100 new as well as celebrated artists, playwrights, performers and musicians from the San Diego region, enlivening the historic University Heights community. The UHAO features local businesses, schools, churches, theaters, and a free shuttle tour of artist studios in the area.

Trolley Barn Park is the starting point for the tours, featuring 40 booths of visual artists of all mediums including painting, photography, art glass, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media, as well as historic groups, community groups and the will call booth for the Taste of UH.

Swedenborg Hall hosts eight theater troops and local playwrights. From noon-1pm, free theater with one act plays from Janet S. Tiger, DJ Sullivan, Chronos Theatre Group, Talent To aMuse, DangerHouse Theater Company, Swedenborg Hall’s playwright-in-residence: Kevin Six, and New Perspective presents Feeding Time at the Human House by playwright David Wiener.

Swedenborg Hall also features free live music from Korrie Paliotto, Brothers Nasrat and John January, Happy Ron, Brenda Xu, performance from Grupo Castaña Flamenco Ensemble and Master of Ceremonies, Mitch Feingold.

Diversionary Theatre hosts an exhibition of artist Albert Jackson in their lobby. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library/School of the Arts features an open house with student art exhibit.   Free Admission to the JA Cooley Museum for the Taste of University Heights and the UH Arts Open. On display are over two dozen automobiles from 1886 through 1933, along with 25 categories of antiques represented by collections. Lafayette Hotel features the Boulevard Arts District current public art displays as well as the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego Expressive Arts Program.

Open artists studios this year include Park Blvd Artworks BorrelliSpace studio artists: Sandra TeelJeanette Osias, Georges Merx Photography, Art Sueltz, and local neighborhood studios: Jo Caldwell, Chris Schaie, Irene Corey, Paul Stolte Designs, Mario Torero/Guillermo Acevedo, Larry Caveney, and Jeffrey Wynne.

A complimentary color program of the Taste and UHAO exhibits —including participating restaurants, artwork, and a walking/shuttle tour map-- will be available on the day of the event at information booths and online at Free shuttle service will assist visitors on their Taste and artist studio tour throughout the day. 

Some of the participating restaurants include:  Muzita Abyssinian Bistro, Soltan Banoo, Twiggs, El Zarape, Monica's at the Park, Pizza Gourmet Express, Eclipse Chocolat, Pizziera Luigi, Bahia Mexican Restaurant, Cream Coffee House, Loving Hut, Mama's Bakery & Lebanese Deli, and Gulf Coast Grill.

The UH Arts Open is free while Taste of UH tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the event. Taste of UH tickets may be purchased in advance from the UH Community Development Corporation at (619) 297-3166, Muzita Abyssinian Bistro (4651 Park Boulevard) and at the Art Foodies reception on September 4th at Swedenborg Hall from 7-9pm.

Art Foodies! Reception September 4th!

In celebration of the Arts, University Heights, and Food, artists in and around University Heights are using “Foodie” or “Taste Of” theme as their subjectmatter for art!   This years University Heights’ “Taste Of” themeis wide-ranging and fun!
The(art-foodie) creations will make its first public appearance along with the representative work other participants at theSeptember 4th preview party at Swedenborg Hall (2 weeks before the “Taste Of”and 'Arts Open' UH event).

Artists chosen for ArtFoodies 2009 are MarioTorero, Jo Caldwell, Bret J. Barrett, Irene Corey, Midge Hyde, Hanna Tawater, Ron Johnston, Weston Riffle, Diana Fowler, Lisa Venditelli, Kim Crickard, MolyX: an international Moleskine exchange.

All are invited to the Friday, September4th reception at Swedenborg Hall, 1531 Tyler Ave, from 7-9pm. Welcome musicians, dancers, actors, visual and studio artists participating in thecombined UH Arts Open and Taste of UH event and guests.

University Heights Arts Open

San Diego, CA -June 2008: The 3rd annual, University Heights Arts Open (UHAO) is a free self guided tour of the arts. The weekend festival showcases the works of over 100 new as well as celebrated artists, playwrights, performers and musicians from the San Diego region enlivening the historic University Heights community. The event spans a 2 mile radius incorporating businesses, schools, churches, theaters, and a shuttle tour of over twenty artist studios in the area.

A complimentary color brochure of the UHAO exhibits —including photos of artwork and a walking/trolley tour map is produced and available to visitors.  The program includes a schedule listing times and locations of the performances by the diverse collection of musicians, performers and writers.  Birney Academy of International Studies’s outdoor facilities (4345 Campus Ave) serves as the starting point for the tour featuring San Diego visual artists, chalk artists, student artwork exhibitions and activities. A block down the street, at the historic Swedenborg Hall, features visual artists, musicians, performers, and live theater.

Free shuttle service will assist the visitors on their tour throughout the day. Program maps will be available online at

Opening reception is on August 15th at Swedenborg Hall featuring live music and artwork display and previewing Art Rocks (artist river rock project to celebrate neighborhoods 120th anniversary).

In celebration of the Arts and University Heights 120th anniversary, artists will turn large river rocks (which are the neighborhoods signature building element) into works of art to be displayed at September’s 3rd annual UH ARTS OPEN.  The smooth river stones are a symbol and a ubiquitous architectural feature of University Heights and make a fitting natural canvas or unique medium for the creativity and variety of artists.

The ART ROCKS!  art pieces will make their first public appearance on the August 15th  preview party at Swedenborg Hall along with other representative pieces of participating artists.   The ART ROCKS! project is intended as a fund raiser for University Heights 2008 Arts OPEN,  and so UHAA will cheerfully accept any free-will donation from contributing artists.

EGGstravaganza project/ part of University Heights Arts Open

Ongoing through September 16, 2007                                         

San Diego, CA -August 2007: This year in celebration of the ARTS, over a dozen local San Diego artists will turn real ostrich eggs into works of art to be displayed at the 2nd Annual University Heights ARTS OPEN.

The EGGS will make their first public appearance on August 9th at a preview party at the Lafayette Hotel, prior to being on display at Designs in Shell Gallery (2754 Calhoun Street, in the heart of Plaza Del Pasado in Old Town).

Eggs will then be available for a silent auction at Swedenborg Hall on the second day of the ARTS weekend, Sunday September 16th, located at 1531 Tyler St, San Diego, CA 92103.  

The project, a fundraiser for University Heights 2008 ARTS OPEN and their elementary school art program, is patterned after events such as Cows on Parade in Chicago and Painted Ponies in Temecula. The Ostrich is the symbol and mascot for UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, and the egg a fitting symbol for the creativity of artists.
